If you’re clicking into this article, you’ve probably got your video marketing strategy and format down pat. Now all that’s left is to actually do the video. But where do you start? We get it — making videos can feel like diving into a rabbit hole of confusion for someone that has never heard “and…action!” IRL.
But hey, we’ve got you covered. From strategy to post-production, we’ll be your trusty guide, breaking down the video production process step-by-step.

Stage 1: Strategy
Diving head first into production without a clear strategy is like building a house on the sand — shaky, with no strong foundation. Your strategy provides a base for you to translate your business goals into a marketing plan. Dedicate time to research and craft your strategy, which will involve identifying your target audience, deciding on the platforms where your video will be showcased, and determining your overarching message.
Let’s say you’re setting up a new love-themed cafe. Your target audience could be Gen Zs and millennials aged 18-35, with TikTok and Instagram being your video platform of choice. The overarching message could be “Fuel your stomach, fuel your love!”
P.S. If there’s nothing you learn from this article (cue tears), let this be the only takeaway — STRATEGY FIRST!
We cannot emphasise this enough.
Stage 2: Ideation
Here’s where you let all your wildest ideas out of the doghouse. Want a dog going shopping in space? No problem! (As long as it fits into your strategy, of course).
Consider the tone, style and emotions that you want to evoke in your video. You should also prepare a script to outline dialogue, visuals and transitions. A well-written script will serve as a roadmap for the entire production process.
Pro-tip: Not everyone is a creative genius. If you can’t think of any new ideas, references from the internet will go a long way!
Stage 3: Pre-production
This is the part that is slightly chor, but still necessary. Pre-production is where you expand your ideas into actionable plans. You can’t simply walk into a store with all your equipment on the day of the shoot and say “Hello, I would like to shoot here”. Like, excuuuse you?
This stage includes everything from location and talent sourcing to logistics. It’s important to visit and scout potential locations beforehand to ensure they meet your requirements. Talent sourcing involves casting actors, presenters, or voice-over artists who will bring your script to life. This process can be lengthy, so be sure to allocate enough time for it.
Stage 4: Production
Now’s the fun part! Finally, we can move away from staring at computer screens to working with cameras, lighting and the like. To ensure a smooth shoot, ensure that you have all the right equipment and devices to achieve your desired look and feel. Most importantly, hire a qualified production crew (cough OGV cough) who can maintain synergy with the cast and crew for a more efficient shoot.
Stage 5: Post-production
If you’ve ever watched The Conjuring without sound, you’ll realise how much less frightening it is. Sound and music are often what make or break your video. Once the shoot is complete, we move into post-production, which focuses on refining and enhancing footage captured. Sound and music design are incorporated in this stage to heighten impact and create a more immersive world. For some projects, you might even need rotoscoping and visual effects to make your ideas come to life.
Now that you know what goes into video production, you’re all set! If you’re looking for someone to help bring your ideas to life, drop us at OGV an email. Our team of energy bunnies will be more than happy to assist you!
